Below is a statistical visualization of the distance a typical person moves on a daily basis per county. Results show a large reduction in the average person’s movement at the beginning of March and April. As stay-at-home orders eased in May, you can see the movement start up again in some, but not all states.

The lines represent the typical movement of a person in a county. Orange/red segments of the lines represent above normal movement by the typical person in a county. Purple/blue segments of the lines represent below normal movement by the typical person in a county. The normal movement level is displayed as a solid black horizontal line. Normal (the black line) is the typical movement of a person, before Coronavirus, for each state. The data and visualization are updated daily.

Since March 1, 2020. Updated yesterday. The data is from anonymized and aggregated cell phone data. Large data set: Slower connections may have to wait for the visualization to load. It’s a large data set. Best viewed on desktop. Mobile users may have to scroll horizontally to view each state.
