Supreme Court Sides with Trump Administration to End 2020 Census Count
- The Supreme Court on Tuesday paved the way for the Trump administration to end field operations for the 2020 census, blocking a lower court ruling that had prolonged the count.
- As is usual for emergency situations, the ruling came in an unsigned order.
- Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented.
The case emerged after Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross backtracked on a decision proposed in April, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, to extend the count until Oct. 31.
In August, Ross said that the count would close at the end of September in order to reach a statutory deadline of Dec. 31 for the president to announce the census results.
To preserve the extended deadline, a coalition of community organizations, states, counties, and Native American tribes sued.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had ordered the administration not to end the count before Oct. 31 while the case continued to work its way through the lower courts.

The government said it has already enumerated 99.7 percent of all households, which it said was comparable to the rate of past census counts.
Why are the liberal all upset at this? 99.7%? That’s nearly everyone – and why put our census workers at risk when that rate is similar to prior years.
Liberal outrage on MSNBC at this ruling. They think it’s WW3. But with 97.7 of all households counted, it seems like a very pragmatic decision.
